Iria Arenas
Movement Performance Visual Arts

AboutComing from a remote village in Spain, my eagerness to escape the traditional 'pueblo' life has led me to live in England, Germany and now the land of saunas and Marimekko: Finland. I do not limit my practice to a single artistic field, and I am an advocate for the potential of art to inspire meaningful change—whether in society, in the perception of the world, or both (that depends on the level of ambitiousness on the day). Throughout my career, shaped by consistent freelance work, I’ve had the chance to delve into areas like performance, choreography, dance, lighting design, and practice-based research, while also taking on roles such as website developer, office coordinator, and social media manager for the independent dance scene in the city of Kassel (documenta-Stadt). In my latest work, I examine how power structures shape and manipulate the body to reinforce and sustain social forces, exploring dominant narratives in art history and their influence through the lens of Transgender Studies. When I'm not stuck in a loop of thoughts, you’ll find me dancing at home, grooving with friends or clubbing when possible on weekends to keep my sanity in check. I firmly believe in the power of club culture and dance to spread unity and love—two key ingredients we desperately need in this world. Additionally, I live with UC, which doctors insist on labeling as a "chronic" illness. While I prefer not to fully embrace that title, it certainly plays a significant role in my life and dictates what I can do and when—definitely keeping things interesting.

Trascending Canvases ft. Olympia

Transcending Canvases ft. Olympia is a solo performance that reimagines Édouard Manet's iconic painting, "Olympia," in a contemporary context. Drawing inspiration from Professor David J. Getsy's essay, "How to Teach Manet's Olympia after Transgender Studies," this multidisciplinary work combines dance, visual art, and personal storytelling to challenge and reframe perceptions of gender identity and body image in Western art history. The performance invites audiences to reconsider their views on the human body and identity. Just as Manet's "Olympia" provoked thought in the 19th century, this performance aims to question and transform contemporary social norms, offering a transformative and inspiring experience.

anverso - a moving installation

anverso - a moving installation rethinks a new way of perceiving the corporeality of the body when being displayed and offers a new perspective on the concepts of nudity and nakedness in performance art in a strongly sexualised Western cultural tradition. In this installation the artists make themselves blank canvases, blurring the line between fine and performance arts; art work and artist; or between object and subject.

This project is a re-adaptation of the stage work anverso that the artist Iria Arenas presented in 2018 during a year-long artist residency in Kassel. anverso has been shown in different festivals as a live performance and videoart around Europe, North and South America. In 2022, thanks to the support of NPN - STEPPING OUT and Kulturamt Kassel, this project was shown in alternative art spaces around Europe by means of an art installation. A collection of photography, video, sound, and other artistic materials gathered during the creative process over the last four years were exhibited in the space along with the live bodies of the artists.

In February 2022 Iria Arenas was one of the four artists who received a grant from LAKE Studios Berlin for the ON DISPLAY programme. During a month-long artistic residency, and thanks to a team of professional videographers, anverso was readapted for the camera and remade into a short film.

late for laundry, again

late for laundry, again
is part of The Creative Potential of Boredom, an artistic research project in which Iria Arenas explores the means of boredom today in Western cultures. Together with two performers, Arenas investigates how the mind works in this particular state using expanded choreography and performance art as a framework to address this concept. The audience is invited to participate in a journey into the unconscious, guided by live electronic music.

visitors

What started in the previous production of Arenas & Antikainen body of land, in the frame of the Tanz*werke '21 short piece edition festival, continues now in visitors.
It was supposed to be a simple investigation of kinetic poetry, and it still is, but it is as well, a love song from and for the human hood.

body of land

Encountering for the first and for the 1000th time. It is not at all conventional, but at the same time arriving home.“We play the major or the minor”, we go under the water, we come back.

Frames, which tell something about the already lived life. Frames about the upcoming
longing and about the particles of love rinsed into the cells like the sand on the beach.
The moment after is shared, collected and done together, yet it will be a different past,
story, experience and future after for everyone from any perspective.
